~Teaching about Refugees~

During my research for information to write my essay about Refugees, I came across this interesting section of the UN Agency for Refugees. It offers tips and ideas as well as relevant material to help teachers around the world when it comes to explain this topic to their primary and secondary students. In addition to that, this page also provides guidance for teachers who have migrants and refugees among their students. I personally find it very useful, and a great source of teaching material, as the topic is still present nowadays and it's not easy to deliver a lesson or lessons on it if one isn't properly trained or guided for it. Among the resources included are: animation videos, class discussion sheets, activities, information, charts, fact sheets and maps.

♦ Personal Metacognitive Reflection ♦

"This planet is for everyone, borders are for no-one. It's all about freedom." I can't help but agree with Zephaniah's words, especially because he's given a beautiful voice to people who's been mistreated and ignored for so long. The topic about refugees and what they suffer has been present in poetry, music, books and movies. They're all essentially Voices speaking for those who cannot speak, those who aren't heard, or those who don't have the strength to try anymore. As a teacher, I believe it is important to contribute to these helping voices. It is important to teach not just academic knowledge but also about  respect, kindness, tolerance. Mine might not be a very loud voice, or a poetic one, but I just can't shake the feeling that we, teachers, are just as responsible for making the world a better place for everyone alike. While writing an essay was certainly a difficult challenge, it also prompted me to do a deeper research on a topic that I wasn't so familiar with. But it's a topic I will certainly teach to my future students and discuss with them, hoping to join mine and their voices with those of great people like Zephaniah, Bilston, and Shaun Tan among others.
